Many rappers tackle important social issues. Their songs are powerful and catchy and they get the message across their fans and the media. Here comes Oort Kuiper [pronounced oortkaiper]. He is a song writer and rap singer who is dealing with science. He is in fact a science communicator based in Wales (originally from London, UK). His song GENEticS at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OnwOKiMVb8 gained a lot of popularity. The weekend host of www.PersonalizedMedicineTV.com Alexander Kuklin, PhD interviewed Oort Kuiper for one of the episodes of This Week in Personalized Medicine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Anqdd1h3og). Personalized Medicine is a form of medicine that utilizes a person’s genetic information to understand what medicines would be most useful for him or her. Genetics is discussed all the time at the www.personalziedmedicineTV.com online channel.
The creator of the song GENEticS uses the name Oort Kuiper, which is made up of two words. The word Oort is for the hypothesized spherical cloud of comets, which lie about a light-year from the Sun. The outer limit of the Oort cloud defines the cosmographical boundary of the Solar System and the region of the Sun's gravitational dominance. Kuiper comes from the term Kuiper Belt, which is less than one thousandth of the Oort cloud's distance. As the artist himself says, “It is quite a spacey name.”
In the interview, Oort Kuiper explains how he creates his music, how he communicates science to his audiences, and shares his plans for the future. Watch the interview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Anqdd1h3og.
